Room Tour!(Boho Style)

Updated: Apr 17, 2021

We've probably spent more time in our rooms this year than we wanted to - so I totally understand if you're in the market to revamp your living space! Hopefully this article gives you some inspiration, ideas about where to search for items, and tips on how you can repurpose old decor!

The story of how I came to redecorate my room takes place over a year ago. Let’s rewind to April 2019 - I’d just arrived home from studying abroad in the Netherlands and wanted nothing more than to sleep for two weeks straight. It was a whirlwind three months and an incredible start to the year. I’d visited many new countries, but one of my favorites by far was Spain. I fell in love with the colors, the culture and lifestyle, and felt the beauty and vibrancy of life while I was there.

I needed to take some of that energy home with me, and the best place I felt to implement it was my room. While the final product has more of a California-boho feel, my initial vision started with the dark reds, beautiful oranges, and warm yellow tones of Spain. I apparently talked about it so much that my mom started redecorating before I even got home!

It had been around seven years since I did anything with my room and while I still loved it, it was time for a change. I got a few new wall accessories, a comforter and pillows to match, and a fun circular rug for the floor. At the time it felt complete, but in hindsight it looked stuck in limbo between the new and old look. Flash forward to March 2020 when I came home from school to quarantine and had an abundant amount of time on my hands to finally complete my room.

Now that you’re all caught up to speed, my four orders of business were to 1. repaint my ceiling (as it was still lilac from my old room) 2. get a new bed (I’d had the same one since I was four years old), 3. get a new desk, and 4. figure out new wall art.

1. Painting

Our first task to conquer was picking the paint color and deciding which wall to paint. I initially assumed I would paint the ceiling a different color and call it a day. Oh, how wrong I was! After hours scoping on Pinterest for inspiration, I decided an accent wall would add a fun flare to the room. It took me what felt like a month to pick the paint color.

After buying at least five tester quarts and turning my wall into an atrocious modern art painting, I stared at the colors for days. DAYS, people. I’d never been so indecisive about anything in my life. I finally chose Egyptian Clay by Benjamin Moore (also linked in my favorites). It took my mom and I three days to paint over the lilac ceiling and finish the accent wall, but it turned out even better than I pictured in my head!

2. Bed

I’ve had the same bed my entire life; it’s quite literally grown up with me. Here I am as a lil' one barely taking up half the space!

My mom (being a lover of interior design herself) had a vision for a rattan daybed. Now, if you look online for “rattan daybeds” there’s only about 10 options to choose from, so then it came down to price.

In the beginning of June we were between the Canoga Rattan Bed at Urban Outfitters or the Avalon Day Bed at Serena & Lily. We were close to ordering the Canoga bed because it was significantly cheaper, but one day during my research I found a Serena & Lily Outlet store not far from my house.

This is an expensive bed, but we scored getting it at the outlet for half off AND discounted an extra 20%!! The feel of my room completely transformed when we put the bed in and I couldn’t have been happier with how it looked. Not only is it a stunning bed, but the rattan texture really popped against the accent wall.

3. Desk

I had a modern glass oval desk in my old room (originally from Ikea) that served me well during long hours of studying in high school, but there’s no need for a large desk anymore now that I’m in Boston! In the middle of July, my mom found and ordered the cutest lemon yellow desk from Target (also linked in current favorites from a different website as well).

Don’t let the fact that it’s from Target sway you into believing it won’t be a quality piece of furniture! We ordered three desks to see what would look best, and each one felt sturdy and was packed incredibly well.

The room finally started to take shape and was close to being done. The drawer knobs were silver (and all my wall decor is gold) but a little gold spray paint pulled it all together!

4. Wall Decor

I wanted to keep the wall decor simple yet striking. My walls before were covered in concert posters and pictures of friends and family, and this time I wanted to strip it back and let the pieces speak for themselves.

I found these stunning portraits of women with flowers in HomeGoods to replace a large canvas poster I’d had hanging on the wall before. They were the missing piece to my puzzle! I also had these flowers from my old decor and used the sample quarts of paint to repurpose them (they were white before!).

I also became obsessed with wire signs after seeing them on Pinterest. I found this customizable sign on Etsy and ordered the phrase “dearly beloved”. I had a poster of Prince and the Revolution in my old room and needed something to replace it! He says those words at the beginning of “Let’s Go Crazy”, which is one of my favorite songs, and it looks beautiful in the room!

Now you must be thinking - Sierra, why’d you’d spend all this time redecorating your childhood room when you don’t spend a lot of time there anymore? Well, since I’ve been away at college my room is not only my own anymore. We’ve created a calm space to hang out or for guests to stay while visiting. The Serena & Lily bed is a gem, and it’s more my mother’s than mine! I know she will keep that around for as long as possible!

5. Other Little Things + Tips

My mom had the idea to reupholster these two chairs (desk chair and sitting chair) we weren't using in our house. I found two patterns at Walmart that I loved and compliment the rest of the room- such an easy way to make something old feel new again! We also spray painted my metal hamper gold - it was silver before!

If you’re planning to redecorate your room or any space, here's some good tips I learned - start with a vision (and be okay if that vision changes along the way!), always try to repurpose something that was a part of your old space if you still like it, wait for a good deal to come along, know that you can always return something (you don’t want to regret not getting it if it’s suddenly out of stock), look for unique pieces, get creative, and have fun!

Much love,

S
